India signed the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, also known as the ’High Seas Treaty,’ to enhance its strategic presence beyond its EEZ and focus on marine biodiversity conservation.
The agreement was signed by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The BBNJ Agreement is a legally binding international treaty under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
India joined the agreement, which was opened for signature in September 2023 and will enter into force 120 days after the 60th ratification.
